Technology Tour of 1.1 MW Fuel Cell System

 April 24 | 11 am | Torrance, CA

The first Technology Tour of the year is planned for Ballard's 1.1 MW Fuel Cell System operating at Toyota's Sales and Marketing Headquarters in Torrance, California on April 24 at 11 am.

All interested parties are invited to attend and must register in advance. The project, which began operation in October of 2012, is powered by Ballard's proprietary proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Ballard's ClearGen™ system enables Toyota to satisfy peak and mid-peak power needs using electricity from either the clean energy fuel cell system or from the power grid.

Please join us for this exciting opportunity. This system is the largest PEMFC system of its kind and the first deployment of a Ballard stationary fuel cell power generation platform. Register here >>; BACKGROUND-REPEAT: repeat-x">

73 Attendees Participate in CHBC's Spring Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Summit

Over 70 members and interested parties attended the CHBC's Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Summit on April 9 at the SoCalGas Energy Resource Center in Downey, CA. Speakers at the event discussed a variety of emerging and exciting fields related to hydrogen and fuel cells, including opportunities at ports (for CHBC members only, join here >>) and hydrogen energy storage. The recent advancements in the hydrogen industry and activities of the CHBC were reflected in the energy at the Summit, while the slowness in building the fueling infrastructure for FCEVs was also of some concern. The full agenda can be viewed here >>.

In addition to discussions and networking, five vehicles were featured in a Ride 'N Drive. Honda, Hyundai, Toyota provided hydrogen fuel cell vehicles for demonstration rides and some attendees were able to test out driving these innovative cars. A Horizon Motor Corporation Tyrano (Class 8 Truck), operated by CHBC member TTSI as well as a Mercedes-Benz F-Cell were available for viewing.

Thank you to all of the speakers for participating! A special thank you to Hydrogenics, the Summit Sponsor and Southern California Gas for providing their spectacular Energy Resource Center as location for the summit. Thank you also to Honda, Hyundai, Toyota, TTSI, and Mercedes-Benz for providing vehicles, the Platinum members (South Coast AQMD and Bay Area AQMD) for their substantial financial support, and CHBC Affiliate UC Irvine Advanced Power Energy Program's student volunteers for their logistical support. ; BACKGROUND-REPEAT: repeat-x">

From the DOE Newswire
President's 2014 Budget Increases Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Budget by 25% compared to 2013 Budget Request
April 10, 2013

The new budget emphasizes the President's continued commitment to an all-of-the-above energy strategy that prioritizes investments in innovation, clean energy technologies, and national security. Read more >>

According to Assistant Secretary Danielson's presentation on April 10, DOE's EERE is planning to allocate $100 million to the Fuel Cell Technologies Office, which is 25% higher than requested for FY2013. This does not include funding for hydrogen and fuel cell technologies in other DOE program areas.

Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Fiscal Year 2014 Priority Activities (Budget Requests)

  • Fuel Cell R&D, $37.5M:
Continue to reduce cost and improve durability -e.g., by increasing PEM fuel cell power output per gram of platinum-group catalyst to 6.0kW/g in 2014 and 8.0kW/g by 2017 (from 2.8kW/g in 2008).
  • Hydrogen Fuel R&D, $38.5M:
Reduce the cost of producing hydrogen from renewable resources (e.g., renewable electrolysis and direct solar water splitting), reducing the cost of delivering and dispensing hydrogen, and reduce the cost and improve the capacity of hydrogen storage systems
  • Manufacturing R&D, $4M:
Continue to develop fabrication processes and technologies for fuel cell components to enable an automotive fuel cell cost of $30/kW in 2017.
  • Technology Validation, $6M:
Gather and analyze data from fuel cell electric vehicles and hydrogen fueling stations - providing critical feedback to R&D efforts.
  • Safety, Codes and Standards, $7M:
Quantify the impact of fuel contaminants for the revision of fuel quality standards and the impact of fast fueling (SAE J2601).

The table below is an overview of the appropriations over the years. Note that in FY2013, only $80M were in DOE's Budget Request (BR), but as government agencies worked under several continuing resolutions (CR), the same amount as in FY2012 was appropriated.

FY06 FY07 FY08 FY09 FY10 FY11 FY12 FY13 FY14
$153M $190M $206M $196M $170M $96M $101M $80M (BR),
$104M (CR)
$100M  (BR)

CHBC is looking for leadership from the Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Energy Association to continue their work on Capitol Hill to make the case for our zero emission and high efficiency technologies.

CHBC Internal Developments
CHBC's Fellow, Erin Murray, who has provided valuable support to the CHBC over the last 4 months, and was referred to by CHBC President Mark Abramowitz as "Superstar in Training", has completed her training at the CHBC on April 12 and took on a full-time position at another organization. Her work has been outstanding. Many of the new website resources, newsletters and other communications you've received over the last months would not have been possible without her, and her enthusiasm and dedication to the organization has contributed greatly to the successes of our recent events. She will be dearly missed.
