California 2030: Clean Transportation Summit

March 20, 2019 | Sacramento Convention Center

By 2030, California must reduce greenhouse gas emissions 40% from 1990 levels. Yet for the past six years, emissions from transportation have been rising. Meanwhile, more than half of the state’s population lives in areas where the air does not meet federal standards.
In short, despite California having made a lot of progress and leading the nation to advance clean transportation, even bolder measures are needed.
CALSTART’s California 2030 Summit will explore what is required to finally and permanently “bend the curve” of transportation GHG emissions from transportation in California and clean the air.
Key topics for the California 2030 Summit will include:
  • Sharpening California’s toolkit: California has an existing portfolio of measures to advance clean transportation that are critically important, but efforts to date have not been enough. What changes, improvements, and completely new ideas are needed to meet the challenge?
  • Marshalling the resources: To meet California’s climate and air quality goals, the changes required for transportation are dramatic. What is the scale of public investments needed to tackle these changes, and how do the investments need to be organized and focused?
  • Building infrastructure of the future: The significant reductions in emissions needed calls for a widespread, timely transition to zero- and near-zero- emission fuels. What is needed to help providers of these fuels accelerate this transition in an effective and coordinated way?
  • Making new paths for clean mobility: The rise of sharing and automated technologies creates new opportunities and issues for clean transportation. What is needed to ensure that emerging mobility technologies play their part in achieving climate and air quality goals, while also safeguarding critical public transportation objectives like well-functioning transit services and safe, equitable access to mobility?
  • Creating new jobs and industries:  Reducing transportation emissions goes hand-in-hand with developing advanced industries for cleaner cars, buses, trucks, fuels, and supporting equipment and services. What does California need to do to continue to grow the clean transportation industry in the state into a global powerhouse?
